THE GIBSON CLIMATE JUSTICE LAB
A justice-based approach to research on global climate governance. Aiming to uplift civil society through education, communication, and advocacy.
RESEARCH
The Gibson Climate Justice Lab's research centers on global and regional climate conferences, specifically marginalized and underrepresented voices and the opportunity or lack thereof for these voices to be heard in a global political space.
"I think what's unique about the work that we're doing is really focusing on the climate justice narratives, groups, activists, [and] organizations that exist in this COP space, and a lot of this focus is then bringing light to issues from groups that tend to be marginalized from this very high-level political process. It's beneficial in that we're shining a light on voices from the Global South, indigenous groups, communities of color, gendered perspectives, that often don't get much air time."
- Lab Director Dr. Shannon Gibson
METHOD
The Gibson Climate Justice Lab combines graduate and undergraduate research with experiential learning to advance curriculum and research on climate governance and climate justice issues. Focusing on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) annual climate negotiations, known as COPs, we track and analyze negotiation developments from state and non-state viewpoints with a focus on mitigation targets, funding, adaptation, loss and damage, carbon trading, REDD+ and civil society access within a climate justice framework. Our hope is to provide critical climate justice analysis and to create curriculum that serves to amplify the voices of those often marginalized - communities of color, Indigenous Peoples, women, youth, and countries of the Global South - in these global talks.
