Environmental Politics Cooperation / Conflict Worksheet

Writer: Shannon GibsonShannon Gibson

Level: Undergraduate

Fields: International Relations, Political Science, Environmental Studies

Have you ever tried to teach International Relations theory to non-IR majors? What about natural science or engineering majors? If so, then you probably know it is a steep learning curve! And something about “theory” or “-isms” can be quite intimidating to students.

I’ve created this worksheet to help students analyze prospects for cooperation and conflict in global resource management cases by using common sense and interdisciplinary language to teach IR theory. In fact, we don’t even name the theories, much less get into the weeds of the “neo-neo” debates or the “ideational” turn in theory development.

Instead it provides students the opportunity to apply the “5 I’s” (as I call them) — Interests, Institutions, Interdependence, Ideas and Inequality — to their selected case study as they search for potential arenas for cooperation or conflict. It also comes with a concept explainer sheet, steps for analysis and post-exercise reflection questions that prompt them to consider solutions or ways forward.
